The ancient tale of “Helumoa” has been told and retold in Hawaii for generations. The legend begins with the appearance of a mythological “phantom rooster,” named Ka’auhelemoa. The rooster flew down to attack King Kakuhihewa. Before trying to attack the king, Ka’auhelemoa ferociously scratched the ground, but quickly disappeared. King Kakuhihewa immediately ordered hundreds of coconut trees planted in the location where he encountered the “phantom rooster” so he and his subjects would be protected from being attacked again. Today, the Royal Hawaiian Resort is surrounded by a beautiful grove of coconut trees.
